Track of the Day: Snõõper – Worldwide

Track of the Day provides bitesize recommendations of new discoveries and old favourites.

Nashville’s Snõõper return in typically fervent fashion ahead of the upcoming follow-up to 2023 debut, Super Snõõper. Known for their restless, rapid-fire brand of infectious punk, the title track from their new album sees them move toward a slightly more expansive and even conventional sound. Well, at least relatively speaking; we’re still very much in the domain where all those previous adjectives still apply. At two and a half minutes, it’s hardly a meandering epic, but it does mark it as one of the longer tracks in their catalogue to date.

Worldwide is driven by a relentless assault of new wave guitar from Connor Cummins, while Blair Tramel’s deadpan vocals turn into hypnotic hooks as she urgently, yet seemingly effortlessly, attempts to keep pace. With a pulsating donk beat opening the track, and glitchy effects and ‘woop woop’ vocal samples interspersed, there’s an increased incorporation of dance music influences, giving this the feel of a punk rave. Tramel’s lyrics also take a more personal tone than the triviality of old, reflecting being pulled in all directions by their dizzying rise to success. There’s perhaps a hint of maturity, but Snõõper still sound as raw and riotous as ever.
