I started Metal Mondays as a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at classic metal, through the lens of my general dislike of the genre. But I quickly began to bore myself with it, so I thought I’d keep the theme (for now at least) and highlight some stuff that I do like.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Ultimate Hammer
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (or Pigsx7 for short) are a 5-piece metal band from Newcastle. They’re typically described as Doom Metal, but it’s the kind of thing that I, illogically, don’t particularly think of as metal. Mostly because they don’t really fall into the trappings which I typically associate (and dislike about metal). They don’t really have the dorky metal aesthetic. They don’t have embarrassing lyrics about goblins or some shit. Now, they do have a daft name, but it’s so daft that I assume there’s some self-awareness there (and may have been done just to annoy reviewers like me, who have to stupidly count the number of times they typed Pigs to make sure they didn’t make a mistake)
What they do bring is what I like about metal; namely big riffs, big power chords and big drums. Basically monstrous guitar bangers, mixed in with psychedelic/stoner rock influences.
This tune is taken from their upcoming forth album, and has enough riffs for about five songs. It dives straight in reminiscent of classic Sabbath. And vocally, its kind of an Ozzy meets Lemmy thing. On the second half it all slows to an ominous crawl, before kicking back off into a more psych-tinged rock out for the last minute.
For a quick summary, I think I could just say that Ultimate Hammer is a pretty apt title. A triumphant celebration of metal in all its ludicrous glory.
They’re out on tour in the UK and US soon, so get your tickets if you fancy flirting with a bit of tinnitus.
