Track of the Day provides bitesize recommendations of new discoveries and old favourites.
Like some of the best electro-pop, Racecar is borderline insufferable, but completely infectious. Shallowhalo is now the solo project of NYC’s Allyson Camitta, having began life as a duo and releasing debut album, No Fun, in 2022. Closely linked to the whole indie sleaze revival, having toured alongside the likes of The Dare, and co-hosting a monthly club night, under the We Take Manhattan banner. That would generally be enough for me to file them away under ‘I’m too old for this shit’, but Shallowhalo lean closer to the playful pop brattitude of Charli XCX, rather than the try-hard, affected nonchalance of others from that scene.
Aptly described by Camitta as “like a panic attack you want to dance through”, Racecar is a glorious rush of pop maximalism. Also featuring vocals from producer, Blush, the song is absolutely drowning in hooks, which are propelled forward by pulsating basslines, and breakdowns so brief it’s like they exist purely to mock the idea that you might catch your breath. This is a breathless tribute to the thrill of the chase.
Racecar is accompanied by a music video which hints at the ultraviolet noir of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, before being swept away in the technicoloured hedonism of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers.
