CMAT is a fucking great popstar. She’s in the midst of a truly breakout run ahead of the release of her third album; there’s been a viral dance craze, a fantastic Glastonbury set, and a little BBC controversy. Her recent string of singles have highlighted that she knows how to write great hooks. And, not to downplay just how important those hooks are, but she’s also highlighting just how great of a straight-up songwriter she is.

The title track from her upcoming album bathes her country-pop stylings in a dreamy sheen, hinting at the synth-pop anthemics of Fleetwood Mac circa Tango in the Night. What may initially seem like another tale of heartbreak and unrequited love, slowly reveals itself to be a lament of political failings and a fading cultural identity. Interweaving imagery of corruption with the human and social fallout; it’s a masterclass in making the political feel personal. CMAT is gearing up to be one of the most important pop voices of her generation.
